A visa refusal is the rejection of the application for a non-immigrant visa by the immigration authorities. The Lithuanian immigration authorities are called the Migration Department and their jurisdiction lies under the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Lithuania.

Lithuania is also a signatory to the Schengen Agreement with a common visa policy. A uniform Schengen visa is one that allows you entry to the member state which is your main destination and also other member states in the Schengen area which comprises of 26 countries. The Lithuanian visa would cost you around 60 euros and the processing of the visa application can take up to three weeks and so it is advised to apply at the earliest.

There are many reasons as to why one’s application can be rejected and usually, they are outlined in the official visa refusal letter and if not given in detail then one can always request for the same from the Embassy.

The most common factors behind visa refusal are that the correct documents are not submitted or they have been forged, the purpose of visit and the intention to return to the home country are not clear, the applicant has committed a war crime or a crime against humanity or has a criminal record history which hasn’t been disclosed, the applicant or the alien (as the Embassy calls them) has been suspected to engage or to be engaged in illegal activities, he/she has been named in the national list of aliens prohibited to enter the country, the funds to cover the expenses of travel are not sufficient.

It should be noted that the fee paid for the visa application is non-refundable. In case the visa has been denied the applicant has two viable options, either he/she can appeal or re-apply.

The appeal can be made if the applicant has strong grounds to refuse the decision of visa refusal and it should be made in the format specified in the official refusal letter. The appeal needs to be made within one month of the receipt of the refusal letter and it should be made to the Embassy of Lithuania which would be the main destination of stay in the Schengen area.

If the applicant does not have any strong grounds for visa refusal then he/she can re-apply after ensuring that the reasons for visa refusal have been met.

Lithuania is a former Soviet bloc nation bordering Poland, Latvia, and Belarus. The capital Vilnius is famous for its medieval old town. The visa refusal rate for Lithuania for the New Delhi Consulate was 27.10% in 2017 out of a total of 1,361 applications that it received which is rather high, and so extra caution should be taken when applying for this country.
